About Southampton City Council
Southampton City Council is the unitary authority responsible for governing the city of Southampton, located in the ceremonial county of Hampshire, England. As a unitary authority since 1997, the council delivers both district and county-level services, independently of Hampshire County Council.
Southampton is a vibrant, diverse city on the coast of Hampshire. Steeped in history, it is rich in culture and activities, with excellent transport links and connections to the rest of the country.
The council oversees a wide range of services including housing, education, social care, planning, transport, waste management, and environmental protection as well as all the day-to-day operations for circa 265,000 residents, 15,200 tenants, 6,000 businesses and over 3,700 employees.
Southampton City Council is led by a Leader and Cabinet model. It works closely with local communities, businesses, and partner organisations to deliver inclusive growth, support vulnerable residents, and enhance the city’s infrastructure and public services.
Southampton is a place of incredible opportunity with a thriving future, and this is supported by a shared vision in collaboration with local communities and partners to make Southampton a better place to live, work, visit and grow.
The city vision: Southampton 2035
Earlier this year the council and its partners agreed a new Southampton 2035 City Plan, a partnership strategy setting out a collective vision for the city over the decade to 2035. The five missions at the heart of this approach are:
A more Equal Southampton - Making Southampton a more equal city is at the heart of the vision.
A Healthier Southampton - Building a healthier city by focusing on prevention. This includes integrating health and social care and addressing the root causes of poor health.
A Safer Southampton - Making Southampton safer by focusing on reducing violent crime. This includes tackling domestic abuse, youth violence, and violence against women and girls.
A Greener Southampton - Making Southampton a greener, more environmentally sustainable and a net zero city. This includes a reduction in carbon emissions, build energy-efficient homes, retrofit existing buildings, and boost sustainable travel.
A Growing Southampton - Helping Southampton’s economy grow in a sustainable and inclusive way.
The council’s Corporate Plan feeds off this and sets out the council’s core priorities for delivering these five missions to create a more modern, financially sustainable council, which makes lives better for residents.
To deliver these commitments the council realises the importance of continuing to transform the way they work to be a modern, financially sustainable council that makes lives better for residents.
With Local Government Reorganisation on the horizon, we have an exciting opportunity to make lasting change for our residents and the Executive Director – Community Health, Wellbeing & Prevention will play a pivotal role in ensuring this is a success.
